Yes, there is a God, he certainly liked the Nuggets this past Sunday night with the last second victory over Oklahoma. I think the Nuggets are the better team playing with zeal and spirit to win that miracle game. I think we will win the series!

Gerri and I kept skipping channels during the Nugget game to watch American Idol. They are narrowing the field down and the last dozen singers are outstanding. If you haven’t watched the ABC show, turn it on Sunday evening and enjoy the very talented singers. America votes each week and there are some very hard choices this year with spectacular singing; and they are all stars.

I’m back on the trail again and have attended several special events lately, including the wonderful tribute to nurses at the annual Friends of Nursing luncheon, held in the new banquet room at Cherry Hills Country Club. The annual event provides scholarships for nursing students across Colorado, providing financial assistance for their future nursing careers. THANK GOD for all our wonderful nurses who don’t receive all the love and respect they deserve. Kudos to Friends of Nursing for over 30 years of providing these precious scholarships.

I have listened to two Catholic masses recently. The first an all-night and day tribute to Pope Francis, so impressive and inspirational. The Cardinals will be selecting a new Pope this week; watch for the white smoke. My choice is the 62-year-old Cardinal Filipino Luis Antonio Tagles from the Philippines. I think he would carry on the work for the poor in the Jesuits tradition that was so important to Pope Francis. I heard him speak recently on TV and he is very impressive.

This past Saturday Gerri and I attended the funeral service for Bill Goldy at Regis High School. We have been friends with the Goldy family for 45 years. Barbara Goldy was working for the DTC Sheraton Hotel when we first became acquainted. Bill became our insurance agent for The Villager. The Regis Chapel was packed with his friends and family members and the service was a great tribute to the Goldy family who will always cherish the memory of a great father, grandfather and husband. That was my second mass, made memorable by the priests and family.

To attend all these events, I had to get a haircut, ordered by my wife. My daughter Susan referred me to a brand-new barber shop opened now in Greenwood Village, a few doors down from Great Harvest bread on University in very close proximity to the popular Trader Joe’s grocery store. The new barber shop is owned and operated by Semion, a fourth-generation barber. Semion has placed some ads in The Villager for his new barbershop.Wow, what an impressive barbershop and Semion is delightful! He gave me a scissors haircut, one of the best I’ve had in years, along with good dialogue. I feel I just made a new lifelong friend, and I urge my readers to patronize his new shop; you won’t be disappointed. It is located at 5910 S. University Blvd. Unit A-4. His number is 720-531-3998. You can receive $10 off by mentioning my Barbwire column to Semion.

As I write this column Tuesday afternoon, the rain has arrived, a blessing from the heavens for our foliage. The wheat farmers in Eastern Colorado and Kansas will harvest a great wheat crop with this timely rain arriving at the right time. The rains will dimmish the fire danger in our beloved mountains. Rain is a blessing from God with the rainbow a promise from God that he will never flood the world again. I learned this from my mother as she read the entire Bible to my brother and myself sitting around a coal stove, reading from a lamp in our meager ranch home. What a privilege from my mother to her two sons. We give thanks this Sunday to all you mothers who cherish your families and are the pillars of your families. GOD BLESS YOU MOTHER!
