February is a big month for performance awards. At the Grammy Awards, the opera (R)evolution of Steve Jobs won in the category of Best Opera Recording. The top cast and composer all won Grammys and Wei Wu, well-known in Denver, was a cast member. The opera was also up for Best Contemporary Composition. The young native of China, graduated from CU School of Music with a Vocal Performance Certificate. He stayed at CU to earn his Masters in Voice Performance. That’s where he met his wife Erika who received her Ph.D. with specialization in bassoon. The couple was married at the home of his loyal supporters Anna and John Sie in Cherry Hills Village. They also lived for a time with opera aficionados Denise and Kevin Gliwa. Kevin takes credit for being Wei’s “diction” coach as he seems to do well in English operas. Mr. Wu was accepted to the Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program and his career took off. He won the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition in 2011 and 2012. Last summer, the bass received rave reviews for his performances at the Santa Fe Opera. In March Wei will be performing in another world premiere, a new American opera, written in English, – THE FIX. Minnesota Opera’s production is about one of the most notorious scandals in major league baseball. He will also be in Tosca – the Washington National Opera in May. In June, he will again perform in the Steve Jobs opera in San Francisco. Congratulations Wei Wu!
We are so proud and honored that you call Colorado home.
