Jemal Abdelkader Dawed
The Aurora man who killed an off-duty Littleton Police officer in an alcohol-involved motor-vehicle crash in 2013 has been sentenced to the maximum of 12 years in prison.
Jemal Abdelkader Dawed, 39 had been driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit and dragged Officer Kevin Wayne Denner, who was riding a motorcycle.
Dawed failed to yield to oncoming traffic by making a left turn directly in front of the police officer. He never braked, ran over the victim with studded snow tires and dragged him 21 feet.
Denner’s cause of death was severe trauma due to blunt-force impact to the head. He also suffered other severe injuries, including lacerations and contusions to his lungs and spleen.
When Aurora police arrived, Dawed failed roadside sobriety tests. A blood draw taken two hours after the incident showed alcohol levels in excess of legal limits.
He was found guilty of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, among other charges. The crimes carry probation-eligible sentences.
“Gone are a loving husband, proud father, loyal friend and dedicated law enforcement officer,” District Attorney George Brauchler said. “An Arapahoe jury saw through Dawed’s despicable defense at trial – to blame Officer Denner for his own death. Our office will continue to aggressively and appropriately prosecute those who unreasonably and criminally put our community at risk.”
