Cherry Hills Village wife and mother Karen DeLeo has contended in fitness competitions for 19 years. It is her passion. She entered the Fitness America contest every year for 10 years before finally capturing its crown in November, when she set a record for being Fitness America’s oldest winner at age 45.
On March 30, DeLeo hopes to add the title of Mrs. Colorado and Wyoming to her list of accomplishments. The competition is being held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex at 1400 Curtis Street.
If she wins, she’ll go on to compete in the nationally televised Mrs. America pageant in Las Vegas in August.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, DeLeo attended college in Oregon, Washington and Colorado before settling into a career of fitness, modeling and acting. After landing a role in a feature film in 1998, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif. to pursue acting in earnest. Eventually deciding that the L.A. scene was not the lifestyle she wanted, DeLeo returned to Colorado. She met her husband 12 years ago and settled down in Cherry Hills Village. Now a mom to a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old who attends Cherry Hills Village Elementary, she still models and acts locally when time permits.
For the Mrs. Colorado pageant, DeLeo’s platform is the Two Hearts organization, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering adolescents who have congenital heart defects.
DeLeo credits her lifelong pursuit of fitness through healthy eating and staying active for maintaining her competitive edge.
