Each year the Colorado UpLift Guild purchases a hardcover, beautifully illustrated, inspirational book for every fourth grader in the UpLift schools that participate. The guild goes into each classroom with two volunteer readers and give each child their own book, and they read it with them focusing on some of the UpLift character qualities. This year The guild has chosen a wonderful book called Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, a Caldecott Honor Book, and will be teaching respect, integrity and vision. The story is inspired by an old folktale collected from people living near the Zimbabwe ruins, a site that archaeologists now consider to have been a magnificent trade city.
There are eight schools participating with 23 classrooms, where the guild will reach nearly 550 children to instill a love of reading and art. Many of the volunteers have told the guild it is the most rewarding day of their year to love on these kids and “plant seeds” of character that will hopefully influence them for life.
Mandatory reader training/book collection will be Wednesday, April 24, at the offices of Haselden Construction, 6950 S Potomac St, Centennial from 10 a.m. to noon. A light brunch will be provided.
Reading days are Wednesday, May 1, and Thursday, May 2.
Call Carleen Haselden at 720-341-7986 to RSVP to read or get more information. Many volunteers choose to do more than one reading.
