March 21 is known for being the first full day of spring and numerically it’s 3-21 is used to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, symbolic of the three sets of the 21st chromosome that people with Down Syndrome have. The 2018 World Down Syndrome Day in Colorado was celebrated with the removal of the “r” word from Colorado legislation.
Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the House Bill eliminating the dated terms “mental retardation” and “mentally retarded” with “intellectual disabilities” and “developmental disabilities” where appropriate in legislation. In essence this action further eliminates the perceived stigma of those who have Down Syndrome, giving way for more opportunities in being active and contributing members of society.
