Some people publish newspapers. Gerri and Bob Sweeney have published “Community.” For 67 remarkable years, Gerri and Bob have done something far more meaningful than putting words and pictures on paper. They have been weaving themselves into the fabric of Colorado, one community, one neighborhood, one family, and one friendship at a time.
In an age when so much of our communication happens with a swipe of a finger and disappears almost as quickly, Gerri and Bob understand something timeless: communities are built when people know one another. They believe neighbors should celebrate each other’s accomplishments, mourn each other’s losses, cheer for local heroes, recognize hardworking businesses, and know what is happening on the street next door. Their newspapers became more than publications. They became community bulletin boards, historical records, celebrations, introductions, and living chronicles of Colorado life.
For 67 years, Gerri and Bob have had a front-row seat to the lives of countless Coloradans. They have watched children grow into adults, businesses open their doors and become institutions, community leaders emerge, and generations pass their stories to the next. They have captured the little moments that might otherwise have been forgotten, preserving pieces of Colorado history. But perhaps their greatest legacy cannot be measured in editions published or stories printed.
It is measured by friendships.
The people they met were never merely sources, advertisers, subscribers, or names in a database. They became friends. Relationships formed over coffee, phone calls, community events, deadlines, celebrations, and even difficult seasons. Those relationships endured because Gerri and Bob understood that a newspaper is ultimately about people.
They connected neighbor to neighbor. They helped communities see themselves.
And they reminded people that where we live is more than a geographic location; it is home.
Their induction into the Colorado Journalism Hall of Fame is therefore far more than an award honoring two accomplished publishers. It celebrates a lifetime of service to the very idea of community journalism. It honors 67 years of showing up. 67 years of listening. 67 years of telling stories. 67 years of believing that local people matter. And 67 years of leaving fingerprints on communities that will endure long after the presses have stopped.
Gerri and Bob, your greatest accomplishment may not be the newspapers you produced. It may be the people you brought together and the communities you helped strengthen. You didn’t merely report the news. You became part of the story. Colorado is richer because of you.
Congratulations, Gerri and Bob, on this extraordinary and richly deserved honor. Your legacy is written not only in ink and headlines but also in the hearts of the thousands of people whose lives you have touched, including mine. What a beautiful legacy. You are loved and cherished not for what you have done but for who you are. Warmly, Joneen Mackenzie
