I am honored and privileged to have been asked by Bob Sweeney, Publisher of The Villager, to write a weekly column regarding legal issues and information for seniors. My goal is to provide useful information to seniors, their families and caregivers, regarding legal topics, current law and their concerns.
I am a native Coloradoan and attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Denver and I have a private law practice which emphasizes elder law, estate planning, probate, guardianships and conservatorships. I am an active member of the Colorado Bar Association, including the Elder Law Section. My goal is to help elderly people better understand the laws and related legal issues that affect their lives in today’s world, to assist them regarding their rights and personal preferences regarding their care and placement, which remain regardless of their incapacities or the passage of time.
Just as my law practice emphasizes elder law, this column in The Villager will be dedicated to providing plain-language information concerning legal issues, documents and topics affecting seniors and their families. In this weekly column, I will answer Call-for-Action questions from readers and you are welcome to contact me regarding your concerns.
As the population ages, many elderly persons and their families are faced with a myriad of legal issues and questions.
My column will include the following topics, as well as others that you may raise:
Every case and situation has its own unique set of facts and circumstances. Certain estate plan documents may work for one family, but may not work for others. Thus, it is best to seek legal advice from an experienced, knowledgeable estate plan attorney, regarding the best documents and methods to achieve your goals, in each particular case. My column and the important information provided, including my responses to your questions, is not intended to create an attorney-client relationship, or to replace the advice and services of an attorney retained for your specific needs, or of any professional, or agency.
I look forward to providing topical information under the current law regarding estate planning and related elder care issues in this column. I also look forward to hearing from you regarding your questions concerning other elder law topics or issues which may come to your mind, triggered by the information presented.
