South Suburban voters approve mill levy extension

South Suburban Parks and Recreation District voters agreed to extend a mill levy to help buy and maintain parks and trails.

Voters also elected three board members to four-year terms.

Voters overwhelmingly approved an extension of a mill levy. The vote was 15,057 to continue the levy and 7,608 to repeal it.

The levy, which had initially been approved to run for 10 years, will continue for another 10 years at 1 mill. The mill translates to $8 a year on $100,000 of assessed value.

The three board members elected are Mike Anderson, Pam Eller and John K. Ostermiller.

Ostermiller received the most votes – 8,276. Eller received 6,986 and Anderson 6,461.

The race for the third and last spot was close. Anderson received 165 more votes than fourth-place finisher, Mary L. Carter, who polled 6,296.

Also running and their vote totals were:

John “White Hair” Gillen, 2,539; Roger Koons, 3,708; Harold L. Neal, 4,418; Scott LaBrash, 3,992; Scott Watters, 3,020 and Daniel J. Lowery 2,692.
